Hemodialysis uses a man-made membrane to cleanse your blood, called a dialyzer. Tubes connected to the blood vessels bind you to the dialyzer. Before treatments for hemodialysis can start, your doctor is creating a site where blood may flow in and out of your body. This is called accessing dialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis cleans the blood using the lining of the uterus, which is considered the peritoneal membrane. Your doctor will need to place a catheter in your belly for access to the dialysis before you can start peritoneal dialysis. Your nephrologist generally helps to determine which treatment is best for you.
